Vanessa Fernandes

Vanessa is a third-year trainee counselling psychologist at the University of South Wales with over a decace of experience supporting people in diverse settings. She uses humanistic, person-centred principles to create an honest, non-judgmental space for clients to explore their emotions and experiences at their own pace. Originally from London with a Portuguese background, Ness is also fluent in Portuguese. She understands the challenges of separation from loved ones, especially during the pandemic, and is dedicated to helping clients feel understood and supported.

My name is Vanessa (she/her), I’m a third-year trainee counselling psychologist studying at the University of South Wales. I have more than a decade of experience working in various mental health settings; residential, community, and inpatient with children, young people, adults and the elderly, all experiencing a wide range of difficulties in private and NHS services. I also hold a BSc in Psychology, MSc in Mental Health, and a level 2 and 3 certificate in counselling skills.

I moved to Wales in 2020; just before the pandemic began. Therefore, I can understand the stress of being separated from loved ones and how lonely this can be, particularly when they’re not close by. My background is Portuguese but born and raised in London, so I can understand and speak Portuguese on an intermediate level.

To support you, I use an integration of approaches; cognitive behavioural therapy, systemic therapy, and humanistic, person-centred principles to help you feel understood and supported. If need be, we can also work with just one therapeutic modality.

Working towards qualifying as a counselling psychologist, I also use psychological formulation to holistically explore your challenges and identify how best to support you. Ultimately, to help you understand yourself and your experiences at your own pace by collaboratively working with you towards your goals in an honest and non-judgemental space. No one person’s journey will be the same from the next.

In doing so, working creatively can also be beneficial. I have a background in art & design with my own hobbies in this area, therefore I can see the advantage of using art to make sense of your challenges, if preferred.

Our sessions will hopefully help empower you to come to your own conclusions to live the life that feels more authentic to you.
